Inspiring Young Minds Through Problem Solving

🧠 Welcome to the Math Challenge Program!

The Math Challenge Program (MCP) is a free, school-wide math enrichment initiative designed for elementary students.  Over the course of the academic year, students engage with 15 bi-weekly sets of thoughtfully crafted math problems, each escalating in complexity to cater to diverse learning levels.  MCP is used by 50+ schools across Washington. Students participate through their school (not individual registration).

If your school isn’t enrolled yet, you can help bring it to your community

🎯 Program Highlights

No Cost: Completely free for schools, students, and families.
Structured Challenges: 15 sets released every other week from Fall to Spring with minimal coordination.
Skill Development: Emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving strategies such as:
  • Drawing models
  • Making organized lists
  • Identifying patterns
  • Working backward
  • Guess and check
Family Engagement: Encourages collaborative problem-solving among students, parents, and siblings.
Recognition: Opportunities for acknowledgment and rewards based on participation and performance.

Why Students love it

  • They get to solve fun and unusual problems that feel like puzzles
  • There is often more than one way to think about a solution, so students can explore different strategies
  • Problems are challenging but approachable, so students feel proud when they figure them out
  • They experience the satisfaction of being “stuck” and then finally getting it right
  • Many problems feel like logic games or brain teasers, not traditional math homework
  • Students can work at their own pace
  • It builds a real sense of accomplishment when they complete a set consistently
  • Many students enjoy doing them with friends or family, turning it into a shared activity

🏫 How It Works

  1. School Registration: A teacher, principal, or parent volunteer registers the school.
  2. School Page Setup: Each school receives a dedicated program page that serves as a central hub for: bi-weekly challenges, submission instructions, and participation guidelines.  Schools can adapt how they run the program based on their own structure.
  3. Challenge Participation: Students access challenges (Oct - May, every 2 weeks) and solve the challenges. They submit their responses by the due dates provided on the school page.
  4. Solution Access: Solutions are made available for students after submissions, allowing students to learn and reflect. Schools receive solutions before being published online for students to access.
  5. Recognition for participation:  Students who consistently participate and complete challenges can be recognized (for example, completing a certain number of challenges throughout the program). Many schools use this as a way to build a culture of problem solving and celebrate effort and persistence.
  6. Optional spring tournament: Schools may choose to join a Math Challenge Tournament in the spring—an engaging event where students show case their skills in a variety of math topics.
