What is Math Challenge Program? |
Math Challenge program is a free school-wide math enrichment program for elementary students consisting of series of challenging and interesting math problems provided to each school.
The program provides 15 sets of challenges throughout the school year; each set is published every other week starting in late September and ending in May. These math challenges covers problem solving strategies such as draw a picture or model, make an organized list, look for a pattern, working backward, and guess and check. Each challenge presents 10 to 18 problems ordered by level of difficulties which enables students from various grades to participate.
In 2007 school year, this program started at Norman Rockwell Elementary (Redmond, WA) with only 60 elementary students participated. We have now over 100 schools and more than 5,000 students participating at this program. We hope to reach thousands more students to enjoy the fun of problem solving.

What are the benefits of Math Challenge Program?
The purpose of this program is to entice, engage and challenge students to solve interesting math problems while along the way, strengthen their math fundamentals, critical thinking, problem solving skills and improve confidence in math. Students can also involve their families to help and engage in a fun discussion to solve math problems.
One of the significant benefits for schools is that Math Challenge Program improves the overall students' attitudes toward math. As schools provide excitements toward math, students (and families) are getting the exposures of solving interesting math problems.
Problems are suitable for grade 1 through 6.

How does it work?
1) School registers to participate
A chair person (parent/teacher/principal) can register the school.
2) We will set up a school page for your school
The page will serve as a central location for the students/parents to get information on how to participate and to access the challenge. Parents, teachers, and students will be provided with this link through the school's website, school's newsletter or direct emails to participate and access the Math Challenge papers. Students may work on the challenge with the help of families and siblings at home.
3) Students submit their solutions by the due date
Students submissions may be collected by the school chairperson. Instruction on how and when students can submit their solutions will be available in the school's page and on the school newsletter. The school chairperson determines if submissions will be collected or tracked for prizes. The chair person receives each Math Challenge solution before the published date.
4) Solutions to the current challenge is available on the date of the next challenge is released.
Students may see the solution to each challenge after each due date.
